Dashboard Confessional
21세기 들어 젊은 층으로부터 유난히 스포트라이트를 받고 있는 장르가 있다. 하드코어나 펑크의 색채를 차용한 채 정서적으로는 감성에 호소하는 이른바 Emo/Emocore 이모/이모코어 가 바로 그것이다. 10대 취향의, 어쩌면 점점 더 가벼워지고 쉽디 쉽기에 활활 타오르기 좋다고 볼 수 있다.
1인 프로젝트인 Dashboard Confessional도 그중 성공작으로 꼽히는 라인에 서있다. 사랑에 상처받은 아픔과 세상살이에서 느껴지는 고민등을 풀어내는 멜로디와 노랫말로 특히 십대 소녀들로부터 절대적인 사랑을 받고있다. 특히 보컬의 가녀린 목소리는 호소력으로 이어져 인기를 배가시켰다.
전천후 싱어송라이터라 할 수 있는 플로리다 출신의 크리스토퍼 캐러바(Christopher Carrabba)는 Dashboard Confessional라는 이름으로 2000년 [The Swiss Army Romance]를 첫 작품으로 내놓았다.
2001년 The Get Up Kids와 함께 이모코어의 가능성으로 인정받은 Dashboard Confessional은 이모코어의 산실로 불리우는 베이그런트(Vagrant)로 자리를 옮겨 두번째 앨범 [The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most]을 발표했다. 앨범은 빌보드 108위에 올랐고 <Screaming Infidelities>가 인기를 얻으면서 Dashboard Confessional은 어느새 TRL세대가 한번이라도 더 보고싶은 아티스트가 되어 있었다.
TRL은 Total Request Live를 줄인 것으로 10대들이 뽑은 MTV인기뮤비라고 보면 되겠다. 팝팬들이 가장 원하는 쇼에서 Dashboard Confessional를 보여달라는 외침이 줄을 이었다.
<Screaming Infidelities>의 히트로 The Weakerthans와 함께 투어도 열게 됐고 그해 여름 소속사 밴드들인 No Motiv, Hot Rod Circuit 등이 함께한 투어에서도 자신이 얻은 인기가 요행이 아님을 증명해냈다. 이를 바탕으로 2002년엔 [MTV Unplugged](111위)를 발매하기도 했다.
이렇듯 Dashboard Confessional에 대한 기대치는 날로 높아져갔고 Sunny Day Real Estate의 Dan Hoerner와 듀엣을 이룬 3번째 앨범 [A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar]가 드디어 폭발했다. 빌보드 2위에 오르면서 <Hands Down> 역시 메인스트림 록차트에서 강렬한 지지를 얻어냈다. 이후 <As Lovers Go><Vindicated><Rapid Hope Loss> 등이 연이어 팬들의 뇌리에 꽂혔다.
대표곡이라 할만한 <Hands Down>은 시작부분은 그다지 특색이 없지만 후반부 이어지는 "Hands down this is the best day~" 이후의 절정은 왜 Dashboard Confessional가 지지를 얻는지 잘 보여주는 대목이겠다. 탁월한 멜로디라인과 노랫말이 어우러지는 숨가쁘면서도 절절한 호흡은 절대적인 이 곡의 백미다. 이 부분만으로도 즐길 가치가 충분하다.
