디스코의 열기에 휩싸였던 시기다.
백인음악사회에서는 디스코를 '통조림음악',
'저질의 사창가음악'이라고 매도하며
음악자체의 성격을 도외시 했지만
영화 토요일 밤의 열기 를 흥행시키며 백인배우 존 트라볼타'를
디스코댄스의 아이콘으로 우상화시킴과 동시에
백인형제 보컬그룹 비지스(Bee Gees)의 노래 'Stayin' alive'와
'Tragedy'등을 통해 상업적인 기득권을 점유했다.
12세에서 16세 사이의 소녀 자매들로 구성된 4인조
Sister Sledge 또한 그러한 시대적 기류 속에 있었다.
킴(Kim), 데브라(Debra), 조안(Joan) 그리고 캐시,
이렇게 네 명의 '슬레지가' 자매들이
의기투합해 가문의 영광으로 우뚝 서기까지는 7년이란 세월이 흘렀다.
1972년에 필라델피아를 기점으로 시동을 건 슬레지자매들은 1979년,
'Le freak'(1978년 1위)을 히트시킨 '디스코의 위대한 탄생' Chic의
Nile Rodgers와 Bernard Edwards를
프로듀서로 맞아 음악활동의 최고점에 도달했다.
앨범 We are family 가 차트 3위까지 오른 것을 비롯해 동명타이틀 송
'We are family'가 R&B 1위와 팝 차트 2위에 오르며 디스코의 찬가가 되었고,
싱글 탑10에 든 'He's the greatest dancer'(R&B 1위, 빌보드챠트 9위)와 함께
상업적인 대성공의 기쁨을 만끽했다.
