E-mail is past its prime. That's the thinking of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who¡¯s unveiled a new messaging platform that aims to streamline online communication.

So that's what we wanted to do here. We wanted to make it so, it¡¯s super simple. You have a conversation with a person or with a group of people. You have one conversation with that group or that person and all your IMSs, messages, e-mails, SMSs go into that. And you have one history and you can kind of go through it forever. And that's gonna be really cool because five years from now you're gonna have this full, rich history of all of the communication that you have with each of your friends and the people around you.
The new platform integrates cell phone texts, chats, e-mail and the existing Facebook messages. It seeks to bring together all different forms of communication in one in-box centered around the people sending it rather than the type of technology being used.

We¡¯re gonna roll it out over the course of several months though, and the reason for the slow rollout is these are really meaningful interactions and we wanna make sure we get the interactions just right. So we¡¯re gonna take a lot of user feedback during that period and make sure that the product is really doing what people want it to do.
Blogs had been speculating that Facebook would announce an e-mail service to rival Google's Gmail and others. And while users can now get a Facebook dot com e-mail address, analysts say the move is much bigger than Facebook just competing with established e-mail providers.

As people spend more and more time inside of Facebook, they spend less and less time inside of these traditional e-mail applications. And e-mail has been a traditional front door into these portals. So today, this is more than just Facebook becoming another e-mail provider. It's actually them stepping up and becoming a true portal for people's experiences on the Internet.
Facebook sees its messaging service as a way to deepen its connection with the more than 500 million users of its network. That ambition also could heighten privacy issues as the company becomes an even bigger treasure trove of personal information.
