Restoration Brightens Van Gogh's 'The Bedroom'

'The Bedroom' is one of Vincent Van Gogh's most famous works. But more than 120 years of grit and grime have concealed its original vivacity, and the true intentions of Van Gogh's vision. Ella Hendriks of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has spent six months working on the masterpiece, taking cues from the artist's journals as to how the work was originally envisioned. Ella Hendriks/Restorer, Van Gogh Museum: I think one of the things that makes a difference is that the artist himself tells so much about it. There are many, many letters he wrote about the painting. He described how it looks what it meant to him. So we have that information on the one hand and on the other hand it has changed significantly since it left the artist's easel. Hendriks says successive restorations over the years have covered up more and more of the original paint. But using the latest in restoration technology, researchers at the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage have made some enlightening discoveries. Muriel Geldof discovered that the red dye Van Gogh used for the floor loses color very quickly when exposed to sunlight, causing significant discoloration over time. Wax and varnish buildup from previous restorations further muted 'The Bedroom's' original beauty. Other issues also were uncovered, including two rays of light that were unknowingly painted over in the past, clouding Van Gogh's original intentions. Ella Hendriks: He described he wanted a feeling of rest in the bedroom with this very plain, contrasting, bright color areas, and removal of the varnish and the overpaint has recovered the vivacity of the colors. But also the removal of the overpaint returns the rest and balance in the picture. And with the restoration now complete, 'The Bedroom' has returned to rest on the walls of the Van Gogh Museum.
