행사의 격식을 갖춘 스피치를 할 경우에 사용하는 Ladies and Gentlemen, 동사로는 '진행하다'를 의미하는 conduct, proceed 등을 알아두자. 무생물 주어를 사용해서 수동태로 말하면 문어체적인 분위기를 낼 수 있다. '사회를 보다'는 preside over다.

second에는 '후원하다, 지지하다'의 의미가 있다. 동의를 나타내는 표현에는 sure, sure as shooting, yes, certainly, why not? 등이 있다. 단어를 공부할 때 단순한 1차 의미만 알아서는 안된다. put은 여기서 '~하지 않을 수 없게 만들다, 자극하다'의 의미고 rout는 '속을 온통 뒤져서 찾다, 밝히다'는 뜻이다. 기업에서 시스템을 철저하게 조사해서 정비하는 경우 overhaul을 사용한다. Thoreau의 'Wladen'이라는 작품에서 인용하고 있다.

키팅은 학생들에게 무조건 호기심의 대상이다. 요즘 좋은 영어교사에 대한 조건이 화두인데, 키팅이 좋은 예다. 학생들을 자극하고 동기부여 시켜서 스스로 많이 공부할 수 있으면 좋은 교사다. Marked는 '현저한, 두드러진'이란 의미도 있고 쇼핑할 때 marked price는 '정가'를 의미한다.
