CAVE. NIGHT
Neil, lit up by a flashlight, begins to tell everyone a story.
동굴안. 밤
닐이 손전등으로 비추고서 모여있는 사람들에게 이야기를 시작한다.
 
NEIL: It was a dark and rainy night, and this old lady, who had a passion for jigsaw puzzles, sat by herself in her house at her table to complete a new jigsaw puzzle. But as she pieced the puzzle together, she realized, to her astonishment, that the image that was formed was her very own room. And the figure in the center of the puzzle, as she completed it, was herself. And with trembling hands, she placed the last four pieces and stared in horror at the face of a demented madman at the window. The last thing that this old lady ever heard was the sound of breaking glass.
BOYS: Ohhh? No?
닐    : 어둡고 비 내리는 밤이었지. 퍼즐 맞추기를 좋아하는 한 할머니가 새로운 퍼즐을 맞추기 위해 자신의 집, 탁자 앞에 앉아 있었어. 그런데 퍼즐을 맞추는 동안 할머니는 깜짝 놀랐던 거야. 자신이 맞춘 것의 이미지가 바로 자신의 방과 같다는 사실을 알게 된 거지. 퍼즐을 완성했을 때 그 퍼즐 한 가운데 있는 사람이 바로 자기 자신이었던 거야. 떨리는 손으로 할머니는 마지막 네 개의 조각을 맞췄거든. 그리고는 창가에 한 미친 남자의 일그러진 얼굴을 겁에 질려 바라봤어. 이 할머니가 마지막으로 들었던 것은 유리 깨지는 소리였지.
아이들: 오? 거짓말이지?
 
The boys are laughing and chattering.
아이들이 웃으면서 떠든다.
 
NEIL: This is true, this is true.
CAMERON: I've got one that's even better than that.
CHARLIE: Ha!
CAMERON: I do. There's a young, married couple, and they're driving through the forest at night from a long trip. And they run out of gas, and there's a madman on the...
CHARLIE: The thing with the hand...
닐: 사실이야. 실화라니까.

All the boys react, recalling the story and miming the scraping on the roof of the car.
아이들 모두 그 이야기를 아는 듯 반응하면서 자동차 지붕을 긁는 흉내를 낸다.

해설
닐이 해주는 이야기를 학생들이 듣는 장면이다. 스토리텔링 기법을 배울 수 있다.

It was a dark and rainy night, and this old lady, who had a passion for jigsaw puzzles, sat by herself in her house at her table to complete a new jigsaw puzzle.
스토리는 기승전결의 구조가 일반적이다. 시작할 때 배경 묘사와 주인공이 등장하게 되는데 청자의 관심을 팍 끌어당겨야 한다. 배경을 분석해 보면 어두운(dark), rainy(비오는) 밤(night) 등에서 뭔가 기괴한 느낌을 제공한다. 등장인물은 퍼즐 맞추는 할머니다. 역시 범상치 않은 인물과 행동이다. complete은 동사(끝내다), 형용사(철저한, 완벽한) 둘 다 사용되는데 토익에서도 자주 출제되는 단어다. ex) When will you be able to complete this project?(이 일을 언제쯤 끝낼 수 있을 것 같아요?) The shipment could not be accepted without more complete documentation.(더 완벽한 서류를 제시하지 않고서는 물건을 받을 수 없었다.)

퍼즐 속의 이미지가 할머니의 방과 같다는 동일화에 이야기의 분위기는 점점 고조된다.
'조립하다'는 put together, '분해하다'는 take apart를 사용한다.  
 
And the figure in the center of the puzzle, as she completed it, was herself. And with trembling hands, she placed the last four pieces and stared in horror at the face of a demented madman at the window. The last thing that this old lady ever heard was the sound of breaking glass. Ohhh? No?
마지막 퍼즐 조각을 마쳤을 때 미친 남자가 등장했다는 이야기에 학생들은 기겁한다. 미국판 귀신 이야기 놀이다. 내용도 중요하지만 목소리의 톤과 음조, 그리고 얼굴 표정, 제스쳐가 효과적으로 표현되었을 때 강렬한 인상을 남긴다. Figure는 '얼굴, 수치, 모양'이라는 다양한 의미로 사용된다.
