The school bell rings as the boys continue to climb onto the desk. Keating begins to gather up his stuff. The clock begins to toll as Keating walks to the back of the class.
종이 울리고 아이들이 계속해서 책상으로 올라간다. 키팅은 물건을 챙긴다. 종이 울리고 키팅은 교실 뒤쪽으로 간다.
 
KEATING: There! There you go, Mr. Priske. Thank you! Yes! Dare to strike out and find new ground. Now, in addition to your essays, I would like you to compose a poem of your own, an original work.
키   팅: 거기! 프리스키 군. 잘했어. 고맙네! 그래. 과감하게 도전하고 새로운 지평을 찾아라. 이제, 에세이와 함께 자작시 한 편씩을 써 오도록.
 
The students begin to groan. Keating begins flickering the lights off and on while chanting ominously.
아이들이 신음소리를 낸다. 키팅은 교실의 전등을 켰다 껐다 하면서 거칠게 흥얼거린다.
 
KEATING: That's right! You have to deliver it aloud in front of the class on Monday. Bon chance, gentlemen.
키   팅: 그렇지! 월요일 수업 시간에 앞으로 나와 각자의 시를 낭독해야 해. 친구들, 행운을 비네.
 
Keating steps out into the hall before quickly peeking back in once again. Todd is the last one to stand on the desk and is about to jump off.
키팅이 복도쪽으로 나갔다가 다시 고개를 들이민다. 토드가 마지막으로 책상 위로 올라가서는 막 뛰어 내리려 하고 있다.
 
KEATING: Mr. Anderson? Don't think that I don't know that this assignment scares the hell out of you, you mole.
키   팅: 앤더슨 군? 네가 이 숙제를 겁내고 있다는 것을 내가 모른다고 생각하지 마라. 이 두더지같은 녀석.
Keating flicks the light off, leaving Todd to jump down in the darkness as the students laugh.
키팅이 불을 꺼서 토드가 어둠 속에서 뛰어내리도록 한다. 아이들이 웃는다.

* assignment: a task or duty that has been selected for someone to do
   숙제, 과거
   ex) Today's assignment in arithmetic consists of ten problems.
        (오늘의 산수 숙제는 10문제로 돼 있다.)
 
해설
키팅의 명강의는 계속된다. 창의적, 비판적인 글 쓰기(Critical writing)에 대해서 배울 수 있다.

키팅은 학생들에게 글쓰기 숙제를 낸다. 학습은 관리가 생명이다. 말하기와 글쓰기는 직접 해봐야만 자기 것이 된다. 여기서 original(독창적)이 핵심어다. 탁월한 에세이에는 독창적인 사고가 담겨있어야 하는 것이다. 국내 학원에서는 서론, 본론, 결론의 형식을 갖춘 글, 문법적으로 정확한 글쓰는 방법만 가르치는 경향이 있다. 그런데 실제로 아이비 리그에 진학한 학생들의 글을 보면 쉽고 평이한 단어를 사용하지만 독창적인 생각이 담겨있다. 영어 에세이의 중요성은 날로 커지고 있다. 특목고, 대학 국제게열, 해외 유학 등 영어 에세이를 요구하는 현실에서 쉽게 읽히면서 독창적인 에세이가 환영받는 것이다.

학습에서 실용성은 중요하다. 숙제를 제출하기만 하는 것이 아니라 직접 학생들 앞에서 낭독하면 경쟁심이 작동한다. 확신할 때 사용하는 표현으로 "I'm positive. You said it!(맞는 말입니다.) That's absolutely right!(전적으로 맞는 말입니다!)
발표를 할 때는 make/deliver/give a presentation 등을 사용한다.

키팅은 학생들의 마음을 이해하고 있음을 나타낸다. 남자는 자신을 인정하는 사람에게 목숨 까지 바치는 법이다. 감정을 나타내는 표현을 정리해 보자. I'm delighted.(행복하다) I feel so at ease.(매우 편안해) I'm mad about what you said.(네 말에 정말 화가 난다.) I'm really pissed off.(정말 미쳐버리겠네) I feel miserable.(비참한 기분이 들어.) I'm sick of it.(나는 지겹다) I feel a big burden.(부담이 크다.) 영어 공교육 강화 방안으로 전국이 시끄럽다. 키팅 선생의 강의에서 영어로 하는 영어 수업할 수 있는 교사의 모범을 볼 수 있다.
