1. The Middle East, of course, is heavily associated with oil. But at least one country there is looking past fossil fuels. The United Arab Emirates is building an entire city dedicated to minimizing the use of natural resources. Our Jennifer Accelstone shows us more.

2. "Imagine a place where the challenge of living in an extreme climate is overcome at no cost to the environment."
Imagine such an eco-friendly project emerging from the sands which also produce much of the world's polluting hydrocarbons, a place that has 10% of global oil resources.

A 15 billion dollar government-funded drive to make the Emirate of Abu Dhabi an epicenter of green technology.

"Masdar city is trying to develop a platform for the highest possible quality of life, where people can wake up in the morning and say, my environmental footprint today is zero.”
3. The building site today is just a fraction of what is planned, a 6 square kilometer or roughly two square mile green cluster, an eco community being built under the punishing Arabian sun over the next 8 to 10 years.
Ultimately, 40,000 people will live in Masdar, another 50,000 or so work here. And this animation promises their energy will come from the sun and wind, and bio-fuels refined from plants and waste. Water will be purified by solar power and recycled from the sea for both consumption and farming. There'll be computer-rised electric pods and monorails for transport. Zero carbon emissions, zero waste. Organizers admitted their goal is ambitious.

4. The project is getting support from beyond the Emirate, the World Widelife Fund has endorsed Masdar city and Abu Dhabi's wider project to include green technologies and its explosive growth. America's prestigious MIT University has also signed up, creating the first graduate school and research institute focused exclusively on renewable energy.

"Their acceptance that this think has to be done, with the highest quality possible, was really gave us the impetus to come here. It`s no longer the issue of pumping oil out of the ground, it's the issue of competing globally for the same issues. And that they need the highly trained people."
5. Through the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology or MIST, Abu Dhabi wants its stamp on the clean technology chain from concept to product. It`s not all about philanthropy and green credentials.

When its old fuels begin to run out, Abu Dhabi wants to be a world leader in harnessing new fuels.

2. "혹독한 사막이 환경오염 없이 쾌적한 곳으로 탈바꿈했다고 상상해 보십시오."
전 세계 오염의 주범으로 꼽히는 화석연료. 그 중에서도 세계 석유 매장량의 10%를 보유한 주요 산유국에서 이 같은 친환경 프로젝트가 진행되고 있습니다.
"비전이 마스다에서 현실이 됩니다."
아랍에미리트 아부다비를 친환경 기술의 메카로 만들려는 150억 달러짜리 정부 지원 프로젝트입니다.

"마스다 시를 최상의 삶의 질을 누릴 수 있는 공간으로 개발하게 됩니다. 이곳 주민들은 온종일 환경을 전혀 오염시키지 않습니다."
3. 공사가 진행 중인 이 현장은 전체 구상에 비하면 빙산의 일각입니다. 8~10년 후면, 뜨겁게 내리쬐는 아리비아의 햇빛 아래에, 6 제곱킬로미터의 친환경, 무탄소 도시가 들어서게 됩니다. 마스다에선 4만 명이 거주할 수 있고, 추가로 5만 명이 이곳에서 근무하게 될 전망입니다.
에너지원은 태양열과 풍력, 공장과 폐기물에서 만들어진 바이오연료입니다. 물은 태양열로 정화되고, 바닷물을 재활용해 식수와 농업용수로 공급됩니다. 교통수단은 자동화된 전기 차량과 모노레일. 이산화탄소 배출이 전혀 없습니다.
4. 프로젝트 추진 당국도 야심 찬 목표라는 걸 알고 있습니다.
"목표가 워낙 높아서 어느 정도를 달성하든 만족스러울 겁니다."
마스다 프로젝트는 해외에서도 지원을 받습니다. 세계야생생물보호기금은 마스다 프로젝트와 아부다비의 친환경 기술 개발 노력을 지지합니다. 명문 MIT 대학도 동참합니다. 재생에너지 연구에 전념하는 대학원과 연구소를 세우기로 했습니다.

"최고의 청정 기술을 개발해야 한다는 강한 의지를 보고 이곳에 오게 됐습니다. 유전에서 석유를 뽑아 쓰는 시대는 막을 내릴 겁니다. 이제는 글로벌 무대에서 고도로 숙련된 인재들이 경쟁하고 있습니다."
5. 마스다 과학기술연구원을 통해 아부다비는 청정에너지의 컨셉 단계에서 제품화에 이르기 까지 전 과정에서 두각을 나타내고자 합니다. 석유 이후의 경제동력을 찾기 위한 일이기도 합니다.
"미래 에너지의 글로벌 허브로 거듭날 것입니다."
마스다는 석유가 고갈되더라도 차세대 에너지의 중심지로 거듭나고자 하는 아부다비의 포부를 담고 있습니다. |
