1. A popular book becomes a movie and helps get kids excited about reading and writing. It sounds like a great addition for any school's curriculum, right? Well, not so fast. Not in one Indiana town. Our own Gary Tuckman reports on how a teacher's successful efforts to interest her students got her suspended.

2. Connie Heermann has been teaching school in Indiana for 27 years. But because she used this book in her English class, she's been kicked out.
- It's your feeling that they were banning the book?
- Yes.
The book is called , a collection of journals by inner city teenagers in California. It became a motion picture last year with Hilary Swank playing the real life teacher who convinced the kids to write.
"My name is Erin Guwell. Welcome to freshman English."
"I give this bitch a week."
3. The movie and the book are sometimes graphic and crude, but also inspirational. Almost all the students went from the ghetto to college. This is the real Erin Guwell.
"Teachers have never been removed from the classroom, suspended and/or terminated for using our book. So this is the first case."
Guwell travelled to Indiana and testify before the Perry township School Board about how the writing program turned kids' lives around. But the Board was not swayed.
4. Connie Heermann was suspended for a year and a half without pay.
"They come to know through reading and through literature that they are not alone in the problems that they face. That's the beauty of the book."
Her union says this is sensorship, a violation of the 1st amendment.
"This is not the American way."
The school board feels the language is very inappropriate.
"The people who know this school district, who live in this community, who are elected by the voters of this community looked at this content and said that it will do harm than good."
5. The board says Heermann is out because she was insubordinate that she was told she could not use the book. Heermann says for three months nobody would make a decision, so she sent 150 permission slips home.
- How many parents agreed that it was ok for the kids to read the book.
- 149.
So in this high school classroom, Heermann passed out the book. That day she recieved an email from her superior saying you must take the books back.
"They were reading. They were engaged. And then I read that email again. And I looked at my students. And I decided I want them to read this book. So I did not. I'd allowed them to keep the book."
That's when the school took action.
6. Many students at Perry Merridian High are bused in from poor, often dangerous neighborhoods. Tasha Watley says she got the book and did not give it back.
"It was just more fun with Ms Heermann was there. She gave us excitement for English class."
And you don't feel you have that excitement any more.
"No."
Gloria Watley is Tasha's mother.
"If the parents are ok with it, then it should be alright, because it's a good story and it helps kids."
7. I can't see how this would have made kids worse kids and it could have made them a lot better. Does that trouble you at all?
"No, what troubles me is that Connie Heermann made a conscious choice to send our children a very poor message in that if you are told no, do it anyway, if it feels good, do it!"
Ironically you can find the in Perry Merridian's school library. The administration says there is a lesser standard for library books than for textbooks.
Connie Heermann will be allowed to come back to work here in September, 2009. Her attitude about her return will not amuse the school board.
"I will not go back into the classroom unless I am allowed to use that book."
Her return may not be pretty.

1. 미국 학생들에게 읽기와 쓰기에 흥미를 불러 일으킨 책, <프리덤 라이터스>는 영화화되기도 했는데요. 학교 교재로 쓰면 좋을 법한 이 책 때문에 미국 인디애나 주의 교사가 1년 반 동안 정직에 처해졌습니다.

2. 교사 카니 힐먼은 27년간 인디애나에서 교편을 잡았지만 영어 수업 시간에 이 책을 교재로 썼다가 정직을 당했습니다.
- 이 책을 금지하는 듯했나요?
- 네.
문제의 책은 바로 <프리덤 라이터스>입니다. 캘리포니아 10대 청소년들의 글을 모아놓은 책입니다. 작년 영화화된 <프리덤 라이터스>에선 힐러리 스웽크가 학생들에게 글을 쓰도록 지도하는 열성적인 교사역을 맡았습니다.
"에린 그루엘이에요. 1학년 영어 수업에 온 걸 환영해요!"
"일주일이나 견디려나?"
3. 영화와 책 속에 일부 노골적 표현들이 담겨 있지만, 이야기는 감동적입니다. 이 반 슬럼가 아이들 대부분이 대학에 진학했습니다. 진짜 에린 그루엘 교사입니다.
"이 책을 수업 시간에 사용한다고 수업을 하지 못하거나 교사가 정직, 해고된 적이 없었습니다. 첫 번째 사례인 거죠."
그루엘 교사는 인디애나로 건너가 자신의 글쓰기 프로그램이 아이들에게 얼마나 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤는지, 페리타운십 교육구청 회의에서 증언했습니다. 하지만 결정이 번복되진 않았습니다.
4. 카니 힐먼 씨는 1년 반 동안 무급 정직 됐습니다.
"학생들은 책, 문학을 통해 배웁니다. 비슷한 경험을 겪은 아이들을 통해 교훈을 얻습니다. 이 책의 매력이기도 합니다."
노조는 검열이고 수정헌법1조 위반이라고 주장합니다.
"미국적이지 못합니다."
학교 이사회는 책 속의 표현이 지나치다고 말합니다.
"이 교육구와 지역사회를 잘 아는, 그리고 시민에 의해 선출된 학교 이사진이 책을 읽어보고 득보다 실이 많다고 판단한 겁니다."
5. 학교 이사회는 힐먼 씨가 학교의 결정을 따르지 않았기 때문에 정직 처분됐다고 설명합니다. 힐먼 씨는 3개월간 누구도 결정을 내리지 않아서 150통의 허가 요청서를 학부모에게 보냈다고 말합니다.
학부모 몇 명이 교재로 써도 된다고 허락했나요?
"149명이요."
그래서 힐먼 씨는 교실에서 책을 나눠줬고 같은 날, 책을 수거하라는 상사의 이메일을 받았습니다.
"아이들이 책을 읽고 공감하고 있었습니다. 이메일을 찬찬히 다시 읽었지만 책을 아이들이 읽었으면 좋겠다고 생각했습니다. 그래서 책을 갖고 있게 놔뒀습니다."
이때 정직 처분이 내려졌습니다.
6. 페리머리디언 고등학교에는 빈곤층 출신이 많습니다. 타셔 와틀리는 책을 받곤 돌려놓지 않았다고 말합니다.
"힐먼 선생님의 수업 시간은 재미있어서 기다려졌어요."
"지금은 재미가 없나요?"
"네, 재미없어요."
학부모, 글로리아 와틀리도 학교의 결정에 반대합니다.
"학부모가 문제 삼지 않는다면 괜찮아야 합니다. 아이들에게 유익한 좋은 이야깁니다."
7. 이 책이 학생들에게 나쁜 영향을 줄 거란 생각이 들지 않습니다. 오히려 득이 될 것 같은데요.
[학교 이사]
"문제가 되는 건, 코니 힐먼 교사가 학생들에게 나쁜 메시지를 줬다는 거죠. 하지 말라고 해도 그냥 밀어붙이라는 겁니다."
아이러니하게도 <프리덤 라이터스>는 이 고등학교 도서관에서 대여할 수도 있습니다. 학교 측은 도서관 도서 선정 기준이 교재 선정 기준보다 느슨하다는 설명입니다.
코니 힐먼은 2009년 9월부터 복직할 수 있습니다. 하지만 학교 측은 힐먼 교사의 태도를 좋아할 리 없어 보입니다.
"책을 사용할 수 없다면, 교실로 돌아가지 않을 겁니다."
복직이 순탄하지 않을 전망입니다. |
