1. So is it a clash of cultures or merely a cruel commercial practice? Efforts have been made for years to halt the customary hunting and fishing of dolphins in Japan. Fishermen there support entire villages by hunting dolphins for human consumption. But others say it's both a cruel and poisonous practice. A warning there though some of the video coming up may be disturbing. Kyung Lah has our report.

2. Sunrise in Taiji, Japan... fishermen from this picturesque, small village are already at sea. The day is just beginning... and just like the last 400 years... so is the hunt.

"This here is ground zero for the largest slaughter of dolphins on planet earth."
Activist Ric O'Barry brought dolphins to the living room as the trainer on the popular 1960's TV show 'Flipper.' Now he wants to bring the annual dolphin hunt to the world's consciousness.
"This needs to be abolished. It's over the top. This is absolutely barbaric and it needs to stop."
3. The dolphins are corralled in from sea... fishermen in boats... and divers in the water chase or drag them into this lagoon. In only a few minutes the water turns red with blood-- the dolphins, stabbed and slashed. Activists who've released video like this in the past say the animals suffer, sometimes bleeding to death for hours. The water in the cove stays bloody for hours and that's something the fishermen don't want the animal activists, the media or the public to see. So in the public parks overlooking the cove, they've put up these tarps, hoping to obscure the view."
4. As we're talking to O'Barry...
"Here come the boys."
'The boys' are the local fishermen. And they're angry that we're interviewing the activist they've been battling for five years. Even the police watch outsiders. We're stopped and asked to show identification. This suspicion and anger comes from a fishing town of three thousand people feeling their way of life is under attack by western activists.
"I don't understand why they want to stop the fishing," says Masaru Matsushita, a Taiji fish dealer. "This is our culture and they need to understand it."
5. The fishermen and the town government refused numerous requests from CNN for interviews. But the mayor's office does tell us that without the hunt, the town would die. Once killed, the dolphins are brought here and gutted. The meat is packaged and sold in local Taiji supermarkets and shipped to other small coastal towns.

"As long as this is beneficial, or this creates some money for some people, yes, that will continue."
6. Japan's Fisheries Agency says the battle between Taiji and animal activists is another dimension of the international whaling issue. The government allows a maximum of 20,000 dolphins killed every year because the species is not endangered. The government says the dolphin is singled out by the west because of an emotional connection to the animal.
"We don't like to play god, saying that this animal is just for food and this is not. For some people this is inhumane activities. When we have to compare the other hunting activities, and we are sure the handling of dolphin is not so different from the handling of other hunted animals."
7. Do you understand their perspective, though, that they do see it as an outsider coming in to invade on their life?
"Of course. I do understand that. If someone came to my hometown and told me what to eat and what to do, I'd be outraged. So I do understand it. But that's not gonna stop me from doing it."

2. 이제 막 동이 트기 시작한 일본의 작은 어촌 마을 타이지에서는 어부들이 벌써 바다로 나가 하루 일과를 준비합니다. 지난 400년 동안 그래왔던 것처럼, 사냥이 시작됩니다.

"지상 최대의 돌고래 살육이 이뤄지고 있는 돌고래 학살의 온상지입니다."
1960년대 미국 인기 TV 시리즈 '돌고래 플리퍼'의 조련사로 잘 알려진 릭 오베리 씨는, 타이지 마을의 돌고래 사냥에 대한 국제 사회의 경각심을 일깨우는데 앞장서고 있습니다.
"하루 빨리 폐지되어야 합니다. 원시적이고 잔인한 행위이니만큼 즉각 중단해야 합니다."
3. 어부들과 잠수부들에게 쫓겨 막다른 길로 내몰린 고래들이 시야 밖으로 사라진지 얼마 안돼 주변 바다가 핏빛으로 붉게 물들기 시작합니다. 이미 여러차례 잔혹한 돌고래 살육 장면을 찍어 공개한 바 있는 동물 보호 운동가들에 따르면, 난도질 당한 채 몇 시간동안 피를 흘리며 고통스럽게 죽어가는 돌고래들도 있다고 합니다. 핏빛으로 물든 바다의 모습을 동물 보호 운동가들과 언론 그리고 일반인들에게 보여주지 않기 위해 어부들은 현장이 내려다 보이는 주변 산자락에 천막을 쳐놨습니다.
4. 취재진과 한창 이야기를 나누던 오베리 씨가 갑자기 "그들이 온다"고 말합니다. "그들"이란 바로 이 지역 어부들을 가리킵니다. 어부들은 앙숙이나 다름 없는 오베리씨와 인터뷰 중인 취재진에게 화를 내며 불만을 표시했습니다. 경찰들도 적대감을 드러내며, 신분증을 요구합니다. 이방인들에게 생업을 위협받고 있다고 생각하는 주민들로서는 화가 날 만도 합니다.

5. 어부들과 마을 당국은 인터뷰 요청을 거절했지만, 시장실 측은 돌고래잡이가 중단되면 마을도 사라지게 될 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 도살된 돌고래는 내장을 제거하고 알맞은 크기로 잘라 포장된 뒤 인근 슈퍼마켓와 주변 해안 마을로 보내집니다.

"돌고래잡이로 금전적인 이익이나 소득을 얻는 사람들이 존재하는 한 계속 될 것입니다."
6. 일본 수산청은 타이지 마을과 동물 보호 운동가들의 대립은 고래잡이를 둘러싼 국제적 논란의 또 다른 측면이라고 밝히고 있습니다. 매년 최대 2만 마리까지 돌고래 잡이를 허용하고 있는 일본 당국은, 멸종 위기종도 아닌데 단순히 감상어린 애착 때문에 돌고래 잡이 금지를 요구하는 동물 보호 운동가들의 주장이 부당하다는 입장입니다.
"어떤 동물은 먹어도 되고, 어떤 동물은 먹으면 안 된다는 식의 주장은 부당합니다. 돌고래 잡이를 비인간적인 행위라고 비난하는 사람들도 있지만, 다른 동물을 사냥하는 것과 비교해 보면, 별반 다를 게 없습니다."
7. 외부인들이 자신들의 삶의 방식을 위협한다고 생각하는 그들의 입장을 이해하십니까?
"물론입니다. 저도 누군가 제 고향에 찾아와, 이래라저래라 한다면 분명히 화가날 것입니다. 그런 그들의 입장을 이해 못하는 건 아니지만, 그렇다고 이 일을 그만 두지는 않을 겁니다."
이에 따라, 타이지 마을을 배경으로 벌어지는 주민들과 동물 보호 운동가들 간의 갈등은 당분간 계속될 것으로 전망됩니다. |
