[Lead-in] 1. Well, after six months and 25,000 grueling kilometers a cheap Soviet-era car has finally reached Cambodia. The journey began in Germany. The goal, to raise money for Asia¡¯s street orphans. Dan Rivers reports those who went along for the ride had their work cut out for them for sure. But, boy, do they have some stories to tell.
[Story] 2. If you gonna pick a car to drive half way around the world a Trabant probably wouldn't be your first choice. But for the organizers of the Trabant trek, these super-basic East European cars presented the perfect challenge.
[John Drury / Trabant Trek] "It took us five and a half months which is actually in total, maybe, about 170 days, we visited 21 countries, we had about 323 break-downs and in the end the whole trip was just absolutely incredible!"
Would you do it again? "No, ha ha ha ha!"
3. They drove and at some points pushed these flyweight cars from Germany all the way to South East Asia, raising money for their favorite charity which helps street children in Cambodia.
[John Lovejoy / Trabant Trek Organizer] "The charities are very community integrated and they focus on putting the kids back into their communities as rehabilitated children who can hold down a job, who can go to school."
They endured some pretty tough conditions, camping en route to ensure every cent donated went to charity.
"Dirt everywhere on my back, my hairs. It feels like I've been rubbing my head and it feels like I have ticks, but it's just dirt and rocks."
4. And the Trabants also suffered on the punishing roads of Central Asia.
"Wheel bearing one is back together"
Mechanic Anthony Perez was constantly patching them up.
[Anthony Perez / Trabant Trek Mechanic] "They're really simple to work with, it takes about 20 minutes to pull engine out of them. It has a two stoke engine, two cylinders, less than 600 cc, produces about 26 horse-power."
5. The Trabant has been described as the worst car in the world, but these guys say it's more like driving a lunchbox with a lawnmower engine. But this icon of communist East Europe has got them half way around the world, some 26,000 kilometers, about 16,000 miles.
"We're at White Horse pass, which is the highest pass in all the Parmirs, and we made it in Trabants."
6. All the way they set new records for the world's most basic car.
"There's plenty of people who make transcontinental journeys in land cruisers and land rovers, and we just try, we thought we'd try do something more unique.¡±
They're still hoping to raise more money for their charity in Cambodia and are now considering taking these comical communist cars to the United States. The U.S. authorities might question the roadworthiness of the Trabants, but the guys would beg to differ.
