[Lead-In] 1. A court in Kenya has acquitted 3 men charged in connection with 2002 bombing of an Israeli owned hotel in Mombasa saying there was not enough evidence for conviction. Jeff Koinange is in Nairobi with details.
[Story] 2. They enterd the courtroom to learn their fate in a terror trial that shocked the nation - twin attacks on Israeli interests in Kenya's coastal town of Mombasa in 2002. The first - an attempt to shoot down an Israeli airliner in mid-flight – failed, followed soon after by a bomb blast at an Israeli owned hotel that left 15 dead and dozens wounded.
3. Kenyan police arrested 12 suspected terrorists but only 7 stood trial. Four were acquitted 3 weeks ago by the chief magistrate who said there was clear lack of evidence. One was later arrested on weapons charges.
4. Families of the remaining suspects have been coming to the trial for the past two and half years and this was judgement day. The verdict, once again, a victory for the defence.
[Kirathe Wandugi, Defense Lawyer] "They have been acquitted of all the offences they were charged with. We are very very happy. It's been very very long, two and a half years. And they've gone through about four trials so we are very happy that's it's all over."
5. And a vindication for the relatives who insisted their family members were innocent from the start.
[Mariam Salmin, Wife of Freed Suspect] "I am so happy, so excited," says Mariam Salmin - wife of one of the suspects. "In all this, god has helped me. What I prayed for is my husband to be released and I really thank the Almighty for this. I am so grateful," she says.
6. Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the bombing but the suspects deny any links to the terror group. Out of the original suspects only one now remains in custody. But he too may soon be let go. The bottom line? To date, no one has been held accountable for one of the worst terrorist incidents in Kenyan history. Jeff Koinange, CNN, Nairobi, Kenya.
